Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD) 2009
The Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD) 2009 is the Scottish Government’s official tool for identifying concentrations of deprivation in Scotland. SIMD09 is the Scottish Government’s third edition since 2004. The Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD) combines seven different domains (aspects) of deprivation: income; employment; health; education, skills and training; geographic access to services; crime; and housing. These domains are measured using a number of indicators to form ranks for each domain. Data zones are ranked from 1 being most deprived to 6,505 being least deprived. Each of the seven domain ranks are then combined to form the overall SIMD. This provides a measure of relative deprivation at data zone level, so it tells you that one data zone is relatively more deprived than another but not how much more deprived.

Dataset is complete for Scotland. Care should be taken when using this dataset with lookups to other postcode based geographies. Some postcode unit boundaries will have changed since data zones were created therefore exact match of the boundaries are unlikely.

The methodology used to construct the SIMD is based on the approach developed by Oxford University for the Scottish Indices of Deprivation in 2003. Since that publication, the Scottish Government have published indices of multiple deprivation in 2004 and 2006. For the SIMD 2009, there have been minor changes to the indicators included in the Index, for example, Tax Credit data has been included in the Income domain and one indicator has been added to the 38 indicators that compose the domains. These changes along with full details of the methodology used to construct the SIMD 2009 are available in the technical notes ( http://www.gov.scot/Resource/0050/00504773.pdf).
