Nature Conservation Orders
Nature Conservation Orders (NCOs) are made to protect any natural feature of land that is within (1) a site of special scientific interest (SSSI), (2) a European site or (3) other land of special interest, and where it is either being actively damaged or there is evidence that it is under threat of damage. The Orders set out certain prohibited operations and the land to which they apply.

Before November 2004 NCOs for SSSIs were made under section 29 of the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981, and Special NCOs (SNCOs) were made for European sites under regulation 22 of the Conservation (Natural Habitats etc) Regulations 1994. In November 2004 the distinction between NCOs and SNCOs was abolished and now, all NCOs are made under section 23 of the Nature Conservation (Scotland) Act 2004. Scottish Ministers make NCOs after consultation with SNH. No NCOs have been made to protect other land of special interest.
