Census 2022 – Output Areas Part Removed
Output Areas – Part Removed are polygons that were removed in order to make an OA single part. This was purely a cosmetic exercise. There were 531 non-contiguous Census Output Areas not caused by water. The part to be removed did not contain a Postcode Grid Reference and in the majority of cases it was the smaller of the polygons, but in a few instances it was the larger part due to the density and Postcode Grid Reference location.
The area of these polygons is included in the area figure for the original 2022 OA in statistical output.

This dataset shows the 2022 Census Output Areas (OAs) – Part Removed. This dataset contains the polygons which were removed in order to make an OA single part. The area of these polygons is included in the area figure for the original 2022 OA.
Of the OAs created 531 were non-contiguous because the polygons are separated by other OAs. It was agreed that the parts which did not contain any Postcode Grid References (in most cases this is the smaller of the 2 (or more) parts of the non-contiguous OA) would be removed and the area merged with an adjoining OA to create a single polygon where possible. This was purely a cosmetic exercise and did not affect Census statistics, Output Area Centroid, higher area assignment or area calculations for the OAs all of which were based on all of the constituent parts of the OA or Postcode Grid References.
Non-contiguous OAs are created due to the underlying postcodes that are used to create OAs. A non-contiguous postcode occurs when the postcode cannot be digitised as a single polygon because it is separated by another postcode, water, or both postcode and water. When aggregating the postcodes to create the OAs it is possible, because of the spatial configuration, that any selected group which contains a non-contiguous postcode may result in a non-contiguous Output Area, i.e. the OA will comprise of more than one polygon.
The boundaries are available for two geographic extents:
Extent of the Realm (EoR)
The boundaries in this dataset are to the Mean Low Water mark so that the coastline is extended to be consistent with Local Authorities.
and
Clipped to the coastline with inland water removed (MHW)
The boundaries in this dataset have been clipped to the coastline (Mean High Water Mark) with inland water removed. This version closely represents map users expectations of how a coastal boundary should look.
Inland water has also been removed as listed in the Standard Area Measurements (SAM) produced by the Office for National Statistics
