Census 2011 - Island Groups
The geography of Scotland comprises the mainland plus many islands. Some of these islands are inhabited and through time their inhabited/uninhabited status can change.
As statistics for individual islands could reveal details about individual people, the individual islands have been grouped into 56 ‘island groups’ for 2011 Census output.
Revisions and Corrections
An anomaly was discovered in the 2011 Island Groups boundaries where the boundaries for some of the island groups were not including the mainland part of the island group.

The ‘Islands’ table on the NRS/GROS geography 2011 Supporting Information section ( http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/geography/geo-prods/census-datasets/2011-census/supp-info.html) provides basic counts of the number of residents and households in each individual island in 2011. This is the only detail, where it is possible to produce statistics at individual island level. The reason for this is that the lowest level of geography for which Census statistics are produced is Output Area (OA). OAs are formed by aggregating postcodes. In order to prevent disclosure of information pertaining to individuals, these OAs cannot contain less than 20 households or less than 50 residents. There are a number of individual islands that do not meet these criteria. Where an OA contains statistics for two or more islands, those islands are placed in the same ‘island group’.
A total of 110 islands are classified as ‘inhabited islands’ for NRS statistical geography purposes; 17 of these islands had no usual residents at the time of the 2011 Census. The individual islands dataset is available on the Other NRS Datasets section of the NRS/GROS website ( http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/geography/geo-prods/geog-datasets.html)
