Settlement grid references are created and maintained by National Records of Scotland (NRS).
Grid references are calculated based on the population of the postcodes within the settlement, while ensuring that the centroid is located inside the boundary.
Further details on settlements and localities, including the methodology, can be found in the Special Area Population Estimates: Settlements and Localities section of the NRS website.

This dataset provides median population weighted centroids for the 2020 Settlements.
A settlement is defined to be a group of high density postcodes whose combined population rounds to 500 people or more. They are separated by low density postcodes. Further details on settlements and localities, including the methodology, can be found in the Special Area Population Estimates: Settlements and Localities section of the NRS website. Changes to the methodology and publication are consulted on through the Population and Migration Statistics Committee.
Each population weighted centroid was calculated using a median centroid algorithm, the result of which is less influenced by outliers than the result of an algorithm to calculate the mean centroid. The process for creating Settlements / Localities 2020 centroids was automated using ESRI ArcGIS, but the general method is as follows. The median easting and northing coordinate pair for all 2020-2 postcodes within the Settlement / Locality is calculated, giving a notional centroid of the Settlement / Locality. The distance from each of the postcode centroids to the notional (or median) centroid is calculated using Pythagoras' Theorem. The postcode coordinate pair with the shortest distance to the median was then chosen to represent the centroid of the Settlement / Locality.
