In 1986 the Nature Conservancy Council published a list of fourteen coastal marine areas that had been identified as deserving particular distinction in respect to the quality and sensitivity of their marine environment and where the scientific information available fully syubstantiated their nature conservation importance. A further fifteen sites were added in 1990. The areas have no statutory locus but are made known to bodies with which SNH has consultations on marine conservation issues.
