Scottish Ferry Ports
This dataset represents passenger and vehicle ferry ports in Scotland. These are the start and end terminals for the Scottish Ferry Routes dataset. It was initially created for use within the development of the Scottish Government's Urban Rural Classification. Ports which service both subsidised and private ferry routes are included. Ferry ports and attributes are based upon route information obtained from Traveline data (four quarters of 2021) aggregated from operators (e.g. Caledonian MacBrayne, NorthLink Ferries, etc.), with additional information from SG Operational Ferries Policy team.

The original Ferry Ports dataset was created by the Scottish Government by surveying online timetables and maps from the individual service providers (e.g. Caledonian MacBrayne, Pentland Ferries etc.). A 2016 revision to the data made improvements by integrating information from the Traveline public transport dataset, which details ferry timetables and terminals aggregated from all ferry operators. All ferry terminals in the Ferry Ports dataset were checked and edited to ensure the terminals lay above the low water mark coastline and where possible link with the OS Highways road network (for accessibility purposes).
