Phytophthora pluvialis Scotland Demarcated Areas
Areas covered by restrictions to limit the spread of the tree disease Phytophthora pluvialis. This is the 'demarcated area' referred to in the Plant Health (Phytophthora pluvialis) Notices issued by Scottish Forestry issued under regulation 17(1) of The Plant Health (Official Controls and Miscellaneous Provisions) (Scotland) Regulations 2019.
Phytophthora pluvialis is a tree disease which affects Western Hemlock and Douglas Fir trees, among others. It is a fungus-like pathogen which causes needle cast (where needles turn brown and fall off), shoot dieback, and lesions on the stem, branches, and roots. P. pluvialis was first seen in Devon and Cornwall in 2021, before being identified in Cumbria and then Scotland.
To limit the spread Scottish Forestry has issued Plant Health Notices under regulation 17(1) of The Plant Health (Official Controls and Miscellaneous Provisions) (Scotland) Regulations 2019. The Notices bring in restrictions on felling and movement of relevant susceptible material within the demarcated areas, and came into effect on the start dates noted in the attribute table. This dataset shows the boundary of the demarcated area referred to in the Plant Health Notice.
Note that this dataset contains both active and inactive demarcated area boundaries. You can see which is which by looking at the Status field in the attribute table. For example, area No.1 was superseded by area No.2 in July 2022 and is no longer active, but area No.1 is retained for records.

The area contained in this dataset was defined as the 'demarcated area' described in Annex 1 of 'The Plant Health (Phytophthora pluvialis) (Scotland Demarcated Area) Notices' issued by Scottish Forestry. The spatial data was captured by tracing features from the OS Open Rivers and OS Open Roads datasets where appropriate, and paths from OS 1:50k Landranger mapping in other areas.
Dataset Attributes:
Name - Name of the feature
Area ID - ID number of the demarcated area
Status - Is the area active or not
Start Date - When the area came into force
End Date - When the area stopped being in force
Notice URL - Link to further information, including the notice
