Statement

This is a composite collection of habitat data for raised bog sites across Scotland derived from the following sources:

(i) Scottish Wildlife Trust (SWT) Survey of Aberdeenshire Bogs in 1996 (aerial photo interpretation (API) and field surveys) - updated and translated to EUNIS by NatureScot in 2023;

(ii) SWT Lowland Peatland Surveys from 1998 and 2011 (API and field surveys) - updated and translated to EUNIS by NatureScot in 2023;

(iii) NatureScot CANN habitat mapping for Cockinhead Moss SAC in 2019 (API and EUNIS field survey);

(iv) NatureScot raised bog mapping via API in 2023 to 2024 - a systematic reassessment of the Lowland Raised Bog Inventory (LRBI) 1997 dataset (851 sites) using 25cm resolution RGB and CIR aerial photography captured between 2021 and 2023 (APGB), and soil maps (JHI Soil Maps of Scotland (partial cover) 1:25K (v10, 2022), JHI National Soil Map of Scotland 1:250K (2020), BGS Digital Geology 50K - superficial deposits, and the Carbon and Peatland Map 2016), to identify and delineate bog vegetation on basin peat deposits where this was still discernible (i.e. had not been lost via agricultural improvement or obscured by dense woodland). SSSIs and SACs with raised bog features were also reviewed and re-mapped using the same approach, informed by past NVC survey data (where available), including a number of upland raised bog sites not included in the LRBI.

Raised bog polygons were classified with the following EUNIS codes:

D1.11 - Active raised bogs (referable to Annex I habitat H7110);

D1.12# - Degraded raised bogs still capable of natural regeneration (referable to Annex I habitat H7120);

D1.12x - Damaged, inactive bogs not capable of natural regeneration within 30 years (in most cases these were extensive areas of bare peat, the product of recent commercial peat harvesting).

Assignment of active and degraded codes was based on aerial photo interpretation - vegetation composition, surface structure and texture, and features such as drains, gullies, bare peat and scrub/tree cover were used to inform the assessment of active or degraded status. This is not a substitute for field survey but represents a practicable solution for a national level mapping approach using remote sensing.

This dataset contains the following fields:

SITE_NAME - name of site (if the bog was unnamed on OS maps, the name of nearest farm/settlement was used);

HABITAT_CODE - EUNIS (European Nature Information System) habitat code (as per the Manual of terrestrial EUNIS habitats in Scotland);

HABITAT_NAME - EUNIS habitat name (prefixed with Annex I habitat code where applicable);

HAB_PROP - proportion cover of habitat in polygon; HAB_AREA - area of habitat within polygon (hectares);

TREE_COVER - tree cover according to pre-defined classes - a text string specifying dominant type of canopy tree (broadleaf/coniferous/mixed), canopy status (open/closed), origin (self-sown/planted/felled) - e.g. Broadleaf - self-sown - open;

BARE_PEAT - cover of bare peat in polygon according to pre-defined classes (1-25%, 26-50%, 51-75%, >75%);

COMMENT - notes relating to habitat classification;

POLYGON_ID - unique polygon identifier;

MOSAIC - does the polygon contain a mosaic of two or more habitats (Y/N);

HAB_NUMBER - number of component habitats recorded in the polygon;

HABMOS_SOURCE - data source;

SURVEY_ID - unique survey identifier;

SURVEY_TYPE - type of survey from which habitat data was derived;

SURVEY_DATE - year of survey/API work;

DATA_OWNER - owner/creator of dataset.
