Woodland Carbon Code Projects
The Woodland Carbon Code (www.woodlandcarboncode.org.uk) is the standard for UK woodland creation projects where carbon is accounted for. It is managed by the Forestry Commission. All projects have to register, and are publicly available on the UK Woodland Carbon Registry, managed by Markit (www.woodlandcarboncode.org.uk/uk-land-carbon-registry). Once registered, they are validated at the outset and then verified at regular intervals throughout the project to check the amount of carbon sequestered, and that the project is sustainably managed.
Woodland Carbon Code projects are expected to be managed in line with their agreed management plan (to ensure the predicted amount of carbon sequestration is realised), and a landowner has the responsibility to ensure future landowners are aware of the commitment of a particular land area to the Woodland Carbon Code, should an area of woodland be sold.
This dataset gives the spatial extent of the Woodland Carbon Code projects, along with their current status, species type, and country. The majority of projects also receive a woodland creation grant, but some Woodland Carbon Code projects also include non-grant aided areas, or are not grant aided at all.
Woodland Carbon Code statistics are produced quarterly on the last day of March, June, September and December and available from www.woodlandcarboncode.org.uk/uk-land-carbon-registry.
This layer will be updated each quarter alongside the statistics update.

This dataset is maintained by the FC Woodland Carbon Code team. The data capture is based on maps or shapefiles supplied by applicants for the Woodland Carbon Code. The maps are digitised by the Woodland Carbon Code team, who interpret the woodland creation boundaries using Ordnance Survey Mastermap, aerial photography, available grant scheme data and other relevant datasets as guidance.
Maps from Woodland Carbon Code projects are available (in pdf form) in the UK Woodland Carbon Registry
*** PLEASE NOTE ***
This dataset is not 100% complete. It is
• 100% complete in terms of ‘verified’ projects
• 93% complete in terms of ‘validated’ projects
• 8% complete in terms of ‘under development’ projects.
So far, we have mapped the external boundary of the project (including any open space). With each iteration we will improve by adding more projects and also the internal boundaries so that open space and planted areas are mapped.
ATTRIBUTION:
Proj_ID -- Project unique identification number
Proj_name -- Project name
Group_ID -- Group unique identification number where projects are grouped for validation and verification.
Group_name -- Name of a group of projects, where they are grouped for validation and verification
Proj_Statu -- Status classification:
1. Draft - The project is in draft form – it is not yet formally registered on the UK Woodland Carbon Registry.
2. Under Development - The project is registered on the UK Woodland Carbon Registry and is working towards validation (the first 3rd party check). Trees may not be planted at this stage.
3. Validated - The project is validated (3rd party checked at the outset to confirm prediction of carbon sequestration). Trees are planted by this stage.
4. Verified - The project is verified (3rd party checked to confirm progress with carbon sequestration). Verification occurs 5 years after planting and then every decade.
5. Late to Verify - The project was due verification (3rd party check to confirm progress with carbon sequestration) but has not completed the process by the agreed deadline.
Species -- Species classification:
1. Broadleaved (>80%)
2. Mixed Predominantly Broadleaved (50-80%)
3. Mixed Predominantly Conifer (50-80%)
4. Conifer (>80%)
5. Open Ground
Spacing -- Average tree spacing at planting
Grant_Ref -- Woodland creation grant reference number
IACS_Ref -- IACS reference number
Hectares -- Total net planting area of the project in hectares
